Instagram introduces customisable Profile Card feature: What is it and how to use

Meta owned Instagram has added another interesting feature today. The social media platform is rolling out a new “profile card” feature that is essentially a digital business card for your profile. The two-sided card provides a quick snapshot of your Instagram profile, including a scannable QR code, profile picture, and bio. This new digital tool serves as a customisable card that can act as a virtual business card, particularly useful for both creators and everyday users interested in networking or promoting their profiles.
The Profile Card offers two main components. One side displays personal details like the user’s profile picture, bio, and category (eg, personal, creator, or business). Users can also enhance the card with a music track, adding a creative element to express their personality. The other side features a QR code, which allows people to quickly access and follow profiles by scanning it with their device.
The feature is expected to appeal to both professionals and casual users, as it combines creativity with practicality. For businesses, it provides a new way to attract customers and streamline interactions. Meanwhile, for individuals, the Profile Card offers an easy way to connect with people through a quick scan-and-follow interaction, promoting seamless engagement.
Though Instagram has experimented with QR codes in the past, including for Broadcast Channels, this new implementation aims to make them a more integral part of user interactions on the platform.
In a report, published by TechCrunch, Meta stated that the launch of the new Profile Card feature is in response to Gen Z audience using their Instagram as a “resume of sorts”. The company pointed to a recent survey that found that more than half of Gen Z want to become influencers, which is why the social network is looking to help them present themselves to others.
To use or customise a Profile Card, users navigate to their profile, tap “Share Profile,” and use the editing options to tailor the card’s design. Once finalised, it can be shared directly on Instagram, saved as an image for sharing on other platforms, or added to a story with a rotating, two-sided display.
Since 2018, Instagram users have shared accounts via QR codes, but new profile cards offer a richer sharing experience, highlighting interests and content. Instagram’s profile card feature, now available globally, helps users market themselves and expand their network, ideal for those seeking collaborations or wanting to grow their influence.
In the press release, Instagram shares fun ways to use your IG profile card:
Stay in touch or catch up: Use it to stay in touch with a friend, make new connections or simply find people who get you.
Express your creativity: Get creative with your profile card by changing up your bio, song choice, profile photo and the background of your card.
